Permanent makeup is often referred to as cosmetic tattoo, micropigmentation, dermapigmentation, etc. It is not the same as a traditional tattoo that uses regular tattoo ink (dye).  Traditional tattoo inserts “ink” deeper, beyond the top layer. In contrast, permanent makeup uses more gentle “pigment” infused under the top layer (epidermis) of the skin to enhance eyebrows, liners, and lips.  Traditional eyebrow tattoos do not create fine hair lines, which can look flat, harsher, bolder, and less natural.

Modern permanent makeup can create fine, blending hair-like strokes that mimic the appearance of natural eyebrow hairs.  It’s a popular choice for those looking to fill in sparse eyebrows, define their shape, or add symmetry.

Depending on the area of treatment, instruments used for permanent makeup are either a hand-held microblade pen and/or a digital pen and are much more delicate for natural-looking results.

Permanent makeup is considered “permanent” by the Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals because it cannot be washed off.  However, it is not really permanent because it does fade.  Therefore, often time it is referred to as “semi-permanent”, and typically lasts an average of 2 years, which is ideal it allows you to change the permanent makeup as your facial appearance evolves and as makeup style also changes.

The reason for fading is, unlike traditional tattoos, pigment is inserted underneath the top layer and above the second.  The top skin layer continuously sheds and renews itself.  In addition, permanent makeup longevity depends on color shade and depends on each individual (i.e. skin type, sun exposure, occupation, age, etc).

The quality of the pigment used also impacts how long it lasts.  JessQ uses Phibrow products, which are at the high end, ensuring the highest quality and providing color that stays longer.

Microblading is the latest trend in permanent cosmetics for eyebrows.  Hair-like, feather strokes of color are drawn line by line onto the eyebrows, filling in gaps using a hand-held microblade to apply pigment and to give eyebrows shape and a fuller, natural, defined look.  It requires meticulous detail and precision, artistry, and sophistication.

Microblading is a technique used in permanent makeup and is applied only to the eyebrows.

Permanent makeup is for anyone who wants to have a soft, natural enhancement to their appearance all the time, day and night.  It is most appealing to busy people and those with a medical need.  Mainly women love eyebrow microblading to fill in gaps, and create symmetry and balance for a fuller, natural, more defined look. Men also like to have fuller eyebrows by microblading.

Anyone who wants to save time and desires a great appearance without having to put on traditional makeup also gets permanent eyeliner and lip tinting.  People with eyes sensitive to makeup or sparse lashes love permanent eyeliner.

People with oily skin that sheds makeup easily, and anyone active with sports, or other activities that make them sweat frequently are ideal for permanent makeup.  Those with conditions that make it difficult for them to apply cosmetics.

Nanohairstroke and microblading are often used interchangeably to refer to the same technique, but there are slight differences in the tools and techniques used by different practitioners.  Nano hairstroke uses a device and a finer needle (nano-needle), which allows for  an even more precise and natural-looking hairstrokes.

Precision: With the finer needle, it allows for incredibly precise and natural-looking hairstrokes.

Detail: The ultra-fine needle creates more detailed hairstrokes that closely resemble natural eyebrow hairs.

Less Trauma: The nano-needle creates less trauma to the skin compared to microblading. This can lead to reduced discomfort during the procedure and potentially quicker healing times afterward.

Longevity: Nano-hairstroke may have better pigment retention over time compared to microblading, meaning the results may last longer before requiring touch-ups.

Suitability for Sensitive Skin: Nano-hairstroke may be more suitable for clients with sensitive or delicate skin, as they are less likely to cause irritation or inflammation.

The choice between microblading and nano hairstroke ultimately depends on individual preferences and the expertise of the technician performing the procedure.

YES. Microblading is for men too! People ask all the time if guys get microblading and the answer is yes because there’s a desire for symmetry, neat, groomed, defined brows.
-Microblading men’s eyebrows are trending to be a more and more popular eyebrow service.
-You just don’t see much of it because men are typically discreet about it and do not want their photo images shown.
-Microblading for Gentlemen is Totally a Thing!

*Note that microblading for men cost a bit more than women because it does take a bit longer to do men’s brows than women’s.

With effective topical anesthetic ointments applied to numb the skin area, pain is minimal.  Each person experiences pain differently.  Eyebrow microblading is said to be slightly uncomfortable rather than painful.  From one to ten, the pain level is a one and, at most, a two.

With eyeliner and lips, most clients have said that the pain is mild to moderate and have indicated that it was not nearly as bad as they were thinking. Numbing ointments will be used as needed to ensure the least discomfort to the client as possible.

Time varies with each individual and the area being covered.  The average time required for initial treatment is approximately  2 hours.

Nano-brows are achieved using a fine, single-needle instrument device, whereas microblading consists of several small needles on a handheld microblade pen.  Both draw in very fine hair-like strokes.

Nanoblading won’t cause pigment to bleed into other areas of the skin.  For some clients, microblading can bleed and cause the stroke to look thicker once healed beneath the skin – this happens mostly for clients with oilier skin.

However, nanoblading delivers pigment a little deeper into the skin and could last longer, up to two to three years.  Microblading lasts between one to three years.  It all depends on each individual’s skin type and lifestyle (i.e. sun exposure, sweat occurrence, etc.)

Those with oilier skin (or those who sweat frequently) often report their microbladed brows fading much faster than others.  Thus, nano brows are a better choice if you’re looking for brows that will last longer and for those with oiler skin.

There is no downtime.  Clients have gone back to work right after the procedure.  There is some feeling of tenderness, but very little to no discomfort after treatment.

The permanent makeup will look darker and bolder right after the treatment, but it does not mean that you have to take time off from work.  Eyeliner and lip tint will produce puffiness in the skin for about 2 days after the treatment but will heal in about a week.  Aftercare instructions will be provided.

Note that treatment will appear darker right after the procedure but will soften and lightening with time and varies with each person and with each procedure.  Also, it takes time to become acclimated to a new look that you may not be used to.  Eyeliner color shows the most contrast after treatment. Lip tint takes up to about 6 weeks to reflect the final color.  Therefore, patience is needed.

JessQ will work with you on color, design, shape, and thickness and obtain your approval before treatment begins.  The final decision is always yours, and you’ll see your color before it’s permanently applied.  For your best interest, if your design and /or color request is not reasonable, it will be declined.

Microblading is considered a safe procedure according to the American Academy of Micropigmentation. The chance that you would have any problems or reactions, with today’s health standards, is almost non-existent.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), permanent makeups are safe when the artist is educated in the control of Blood Borne Pathogens and follows all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) guidelines.

Qualifications of the artist is the most important safety factor.  If it is comforting to know, JessQ has previous training and experience in the healthcare field having worked in hospitals and medical offices.  She is also certified as a Phlebotomist.  She practices methods of disinfection and sterilization.  Treatment is performed under sterile conditions and disinfection guidelines to OSHA standards.

Any items that touch the skin are sterile, disposable, for one-time use, and are discarded immediately in a safety container after the procedure. Handpieces are also sterilized.

Medical problems that may arise are often linked to not paying attention to the aftercare process. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions that are provided.

People can develop an allergy to anything, anytime.  According to the SPCP, pigment allergies are considered rare.  In fact, doctors recommend that people with environmental allergies or allergies to conventional makeup have permanent makeup treatment because they can replace cosmetic products that people are sensitive to.

Typically, there will be some redness.  Eyebrows – just minor scabbing.  Eyeliner and lips may show some swelling for up to 3 days, which is normal. Tenderness usually occurs for a few days and treatment takes about a week to heal.

It is normal for the area to, initially, be slightly tender, itchy, and appear darker.  Any swelling or scabbing will subside within a few days and your permanent makeup may appear lighter than you expect but will darken to your customized color as your skin finishes healing.

A touch-up after the initial procedure is optional. We provide a touch-up one month after the initial service date at a minimal cost of $55 (lips $95).  We do not make it “required” by building the touch-up into our original treatment price.  At Microblading Artistry, we make the touch-up optional by having the touch-up fee and the original treatment fee separate so that for some clients, the healing process was so good that they did not scab much nor lose any lines.  They may feel that no fill-ins are needed, and if satisfied with the way it looks, then there is no need to incur a cost for a one-month touch-up.  On the other hand, clients who have lost some lines during the healing process, want a little more fill-in, a little more color, shade, etc. then the clients could book a touch-up.  This is to make it as perfect as it could be according to the client’s desire after the initial treatment heals.

Note that each individual client’s healing process and result will be different depending on each individual’s skin characteristics and environment exposure.

The treatment area must be kept clean and free of bacteria.  Do not apply anything top of the permanent makeup for one week after the procedure, except for healing ointment.

Instrument used for eyebrow is a hand held microblade pen to manually draw in feather strokes, fine line by fine line.  For a powder look of conventional makeup (ombre effect), a digital pen is used to micro-shade the eyebrow.

A digital pen is also used for eyeliners and lips to infuse fine pigments under the epidermis (top) layer of the skin.  JessQ uses Phibrow instruments, the highest standard in the industry.  Any items that touch the skin are sterilized, disposable, and one-time use.

Do not have botox and fillers, fruit or lactic acids, laser treatments, chemical peel, exposure to strong sunlight 30 days before the permanent makeup procedure.

Also, always consult if you have problematic skin, have serious health issues, take certain medications, or already have an old permanent makeup.  A client information sheet will need to be completed before the procedure.

In general, do not pick, rub, or scratch the treated area, do not apply anything on top of the permanent makeup except for healing ointment, do not expose to direct sun, and keep the area dry.  Aftercare instructions will be provided and must be followed.

Note that it is normal for the area to, initially, be slightly tender, itchy, and appear darker.  Any swelling or scabbing will subside within a few days and your permanent makeup may appear lighter than you expect but will darken to your customized color as your skin finishes healing.

All permanent makeup will fade eventually, lasting approximately 1 to 3 years, depending on skin type, age, pigment shade, etc.  The fading will be gradual, so there will not be an obvious change in your applications.  You could always return for a touch-up.  Your facial feature changes and so does the style trend, making it then a good opportunity to re-evaluate the color and design preferences.

Yes, all three treatments could be done at one time, and is a matter of personal decision based on your preferences.  It is a more convenient, time-saving option to have multiple treatments done in one sitting, by traveling once and by going through the healing process all at the same time.
